Athena

The Full Story

Watching the boat market is an arduous task full of critiques, love, and loss. Before Eric left Panama City to cross the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii in February 2022, we put in an offer on a Tartan 34 that we were willing to make several bad decisions to acquire. For better or for worse, the deal fell through as Eric was midway across the Pacific. Once in Hawaii Madison met Eric aboard the boat he crewed for and we got to looking at the market again. It was all the same boats, marketed too high, and the top picks were often swept up within a week. Most of the boats within our budget were in various states of disrepair in ways that we could not overlook. Our search was in North America and every country touching the Caribbean Sea. We hadn't thought to look in Canada. It was further north than we intended to sail and a comparable market to the US.

But there was Athena, listed in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

As much as we love boats, this has always been about the adventure. Beggars can't be choosers! Our vessel is a tool to take us to new places and offer a place to sleep. After Athena, our tune changed. We fell in love with a boat and the idea of considering her our home away from home. Athena has the classic lines of a Swedish racer, and the balanced performance we wanted in a boat. She has a comfortable salon as well as two cabins for crew to find some privacy. Manufactured by Albin and designed by Michael Kaufman & Robert A. Ladd, this boat was truley built to sail. She needs work, she is almost as far east from Santa Barbara as we could get on this continent, but this sweet boat is all ours and the key to unlocking the next step in achieving the dream.
